Fabri had to be alert in the away goal early on as Leo Baptistao carved his way through the Deportivo defenders, but the keeper was ready to make the save.

The visitors took the lead 10 minutes in when Tono saved an Ivan Cavaleiro shot, only for the rebound to fall kindly for Borges, who just had to tap the ball over the line.

Vallecano were back on level terms shortly after though, as Roberto Trashorras crossed the ball in for Alberto Bueno to chip in at the far post.

Baptistao tried to give the home side the lead shortly before the break, but Fabri watched his 25-yard strike all the way to make a comfortable save.

Trashorras continued to look lively down the wing for the home side, but his teammates could not make the most of his balls into the box.

Cavaleiro came close to restoring Deportivo's lead when he tried to fire a free kick in, but the set piece crashed against the crossbar before the home side cleared their lines.

Rayo thought that they were ahead moments later when Trashorras turned the ball in from a Gael Kakuta free kick, but the winger was ruled offside, much to the anger of the home fans.

Kakuta had another chance from a free kick shortly after, and this time went straight for the target himself, but his 30-yard effort failed to clear the wall.

The missed chances proved costly as the visitors regained the lead with just over 15 minutes to go when Abdoulaye Ba tripped Cavaleiro, leaving Borges to beat Tono with a powerful spot kick down the middle.

Isaac Cuenca had a chance to put the win beyond doubt late on, weaving through the defence before unleashing a shot, but Tono was ready to make the save.

The result lifts Deportivo up to 13th in the La Liga table, while Rayo stay 10th.
