Interim Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez says that his side must improve both in attack and defence following today's 3-1 defeat at West Ham United.

Interim Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has said that his side must improve both in attack and defence following today's 3-1 defeat to West Ham United.

The Blues were thoroughly dominant in the first half at Upton Park and they took an early lead courtesy of Juan Mata.

However, their hard work was undone after the break as Carlton Cole, Mohamed Diame and Modibo Maiga all got on the scoresheet.

"We conceded the goal and then they were on top," said Benitez. "At this level you have to take your chances and we had many clear chances to finish the game.

"In the second half we were not winning the first ball or the second ball and we didn't have the control we had in the first half. When you concede goals it is normally because you have made mistakes. We have to keep working and try to improve.

"We have to be more clinical. We have good positions and we have to have the quality and confidence. We had situations with two or three players and we have to take our chances."

Chelsea have not won in their last seven Premier League matches.
