Catania thrash Roma to hand Juventus title

Catania move off the bottom of the table with a shock 4-1 win over Roma that gives Juventus the Serie A title.

Roma have been hammered 4-1 by relegation-threatened Catania to hand Juventus a third successive Serie A title.

The Bianconeri are not in action until tomorrow evening, but their tally of 93 points gives them an unassailable lead at the top of the table.

Both teams struggled to create any chances early on, but Catania came close midway through the first half when Pablo Barrientos saw his effort from the edge of the box saved by Morgan De Sanctis.

Moments later they opened the scoring through Mariano Izco, who latched onto Sebastian Leto's back-heel before slotting an effort into the corner.

Catania doubled their lead in the 34th minute when Izco was picked out at the back post by Gonzalo Bergessio and smashed a volley past De Sanctis.

Roma pulled a goal back three minutes later through Francesco Totti, who was found by Alessandro Florenzi's headed pass before firing a composed strike past Alberto Frison.

Ten minutes after the break Catania restored their two-goal advantage when Leto saw his long-range strike parried by the keeper and Bergessio followed up to slot home the rebound.

Roma looked for a way back into the game and Michel Bastos saw his effort from range saved by Frison, before Maicon drilled a shot wide of the post.

In the 79th minute Catania added a fourth goal when Barrientos picked the ball up in space outside the box, before lashing a powerful effort across De Sanctis and into the far corner of the net.

The result means that Catania have moved off the bottom of the table, while Roma's nine-game winning run comes to an end.
