Brentford promoted to Championship

Alan Judge's goal on the half-hour mark is enough for Brentford to beat Preston North End and secure their place in the Championship.

Brentford have gained promotion to the Championship with a 1-0 victory over Preston North End in their League One clash at Griffin Park.

Mark Warburton's side headed into the encounter knowing that if they won, Leyton Orient lost at Crawley Town and Rotherham United failed to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers, then they would play in the second tier of English football next season.

As it happened, all results went their way, meaning that they will feature in the Championship in the 2014-15 campaign.

The hosts were the better side right from the start, as Alan Judge and Clayton Donaldson had chances in the opening 15 minutes.

The Bees eventually took the lead on the half-hour mark from the penalty spot.

Bailey Wright brought down George Saville inside the box, and Judge made no mistake from 12 yards.

The hosts continued to dominate proceedings in the second half, as Donaldson and Saville came close in the opening three minutes.

Tom Clarke endeavoured to hit back for Preston, before Judge tried his luck with a long-range effort but in vain.

Marcello Trotta and Donaldson had chances around the hour mark, while Alan Browne headed wide for the visitors midway through the second half.

Brentford had a great chance to double their advantage and put the game beyond the reach of Preston when they were awarded a penalty 10 minutes from time.

Wright brought down Donaldson, but Judge's spot kick went off target.

However, that miss did not affect the result as the home side wrapped up the points with a 1-0 win and secured their place in the Championship.
