Keith Southern slams Blackpool plight

Former Blackpool midfielder Keith Southern says that Karl Oyston must attempt to turn the club around or step down as chairman, following relegation to League One.

Former Blackpool midfielder Keith Southern has said that chairman Karl Oyston must do all that he can to turn the club around or step down.

The Tangerines supremo has come under fire from supporters following a poor Championship campaign, which culminated in their relegation to League One yesterday.

Southern, who played for Blackpool for 10 years and was part of the side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2010, says that he is devastated by the club's current plight.

"Karl needs to be honest with himself and most importantly with the fans," the Fleetwood Town midfielder told the Blackpool Gazette.

"He needs to ask himself if he's now going to do everything in his power to get this fantastic club back up the leagues. If not, then maybe it's time to step aside. The fans deserve to know how the club has descended into a laughing stock.

"Blackpool appear to be without leadership, direction, structure and proper investment. Where does it go from here? Unless things change, it's only going one way and that's down again."

Southern's former Blackpool teammate Charlie Adam has also expressed his sadness at Blackpool's relegation.
