Stefan Kiessling gives up on World Cup place

Bayer Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling insists that he has given up on earning a place in Germany's squad for next year's World Cup in Brazil.

Bayer Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling has admitted that he has given up hope on earning a place in Germany's World Cup squad.

The 29-year-old has not represented his country since the 2010 World Cup, despite impressing for his club side in the last two season.

Kiessling believes that the situation has not changed and insists that he will only play for his country "if the worst comes to the worst".

"The coach has made it clear that he is not going to put me in the squad for neither the World Cup nor the friendlies," Kiessling told Focus. "I will only play a role if the worst comes to the worst."

Kiessling also spoke of his frustration at the 2010 World Cup, where Joachim Low used him sparingly.

"It quickly became clear that I had no use to be substitute and did not enjoy any trust," he added.

"I completed four weeks of preparation, saw my family for only two days and spent a month down there. Classic No.9s like me always need football."

Kiessling has earned six caps for Germany since making his debut in 2007.
