Barcelona vs. Atletico Madrid: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Sunday's La Liga clash between Barcelona and Atletico, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Fourth will welcome third in Spain's top flight on Sunday evening, with Atletico Madrid making the trip to Barcelona's temporary home of Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys for a La Liga affair.

Both teams booked their spot in the knockout round of the Champions League earlier this week, with Barcelona beating Porto 2-1 to advance, while Atletico were 3-1 winners over Feyenoord.

Atletico will enter this match off the back of four straight wins in all competitions, including a 1-0 victory in La Liga last weekend, but Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw by Rayo Vallecano in the league last time out.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides ahead of what is a huge game in Spain's top tier.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 240
Barcelona wins: 108
Draws: 56
Atletico wins: 76

These two teams have locked horns on 240 occasions throughout history, and it is Barcelona that lead the head-to-head record, boasting 108 wins to Atletico's 76, while there have also been 56 draws.

Barcelona have been victorious in each of their last three league meetings, including a 1-0 success at Camp Nou last term, while they also won 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico's last success over Barcelona was a 2-0 win in Madrid in the early stages of the 2021-22 La Liga campaign, and they have actually managed to triumph in three of their last eight meetings with the Catalan outfit in all competitions, two of which have been in the league.

Not since February 2006 have Atletico managed to win an away league game against Barcelona, though, which is an incredible record considering the strength of the capital outfit.

Fernando Torres netted a brace in that famous success at Camp Nou, and it proved to be a third straight win for Atletico over Barcelona in the league during a strong run of form.

Barcelona actually failed to beat Atletico in La Liga between September 2004 and May 2007, but the Catalan side do have the superior overall record in Spain's top flight, boasting 78 wins to Atletico's 52.

The two giants of Spanish football have met in the Champions League on four occasions, with Atletico beating Barcelona 2-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the 2013-14 competition, in addition to 3-2 on aggregate when they locked horns at the same stage of the 2015-16 tournament.

Lionel Messi is comfortably the leading goalscorer in this particular fixture, having scored 32 times against Atletico during his time with Barcelona.

Cesar Rodriguez is second on the list for the Catalan side, registering 16 times against the Red and Whites, while Paco Campos managed 13 goals for Atletico in fixtures with Barcelona.
