Kyah Simon fires Australia into quarter-finals of Women's World Cup

Kyah Simon scores an 80th-minute winner to fire Australia into the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup with a 1-0 win over Brazil.

Australia have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup after Kyah Simon scored the only goal of the game to guide her side to a 1-0 win over Brazil.

Brazil were the first team to threaten when Formiga lined up an effort from distance, and although the shot had accuracy, Lydia Williams was able to make the stop with ease.

Alanna Kennedy came close for the Aussies when she came forward from the back for a corner and saw her deflected effort from inside the box denied by Luciana.

In the second half, Brazil almost found a way through when Marta collected the ball down the left and drilled left-footed strike towards the bottom corner, but Williams got down well to make the save.

From the resulting corner, Andressa lifted a cross into the box, and Formiga rose highest in the area, but her header clattered against the post and bounced clear.

Australia hit back on counter-attack when Lisa De Vanna raided forward to the edge of the Brazil box and cut the ball back to Emily van Egmund who pulled her shot wide of target.

The Aussies took the lead in the 80th minute when De Vanna found space down the right and drilled a shot at goal. Luciana could only parry the strike into the path of Simon, who slotted the ball home.

Brazil pushed to get back into the match in the final minutes, but Australia held out to secure their place in the last eight of the competition.
