England captain Steven Gerrard believes that Jack Wilshere will one day succeed him as the skipper of the national side.

Wilshere is likely to play some part of tonight's friendly against Scotland, and Liverpool midfielder Gerrard thinks that the Arsenal youngster has the quality to captain his country later on his career.

Asked if he thought Wilshere was good enough to succeed him as the Three Lions' leader on the pitch, Gerrard told reporters: "I've got no doubt about that.

"His quality, his example in training every day, he seems a level-headed kid, he wants to learn, he loves England, he's going to be around the top for a long, long time.

"There is a lot of time, it's a long career. I'm sure once he gets to my age he will probably be sitting in my position with the armband on talking about another 100-cap player he's that good."

England manager Roy Hodgson recently admitted that he intends to use Wilshere sparingly against the Scots.
