Michael van Gerwen breaks world record for televised average in Premier League

Michael van Gerwen registers a world record average for a televised match in a 7-1 victory over Michael Smith in the Premier League.

Michael van Gerwen has recorded a world-record average of 123.4 in a 7-1 victory over Michael Smith on week four of the Premier League.

Phil Taylor had previously held the record for a televised average at 118.66, but that mark was demolished by Van Gerwen, who won his first six legs in 11, 12, 11, 12, 10 and 10 darts.

The world number one missed darts to set a staggering average of over 130, but he eventually had to settle for beating Taylor's effort by just under five points.

In the following match, Taylor pushed hard to match Van Gerwen's achievement, but he had to settle for an average of 115.25 and a 7-5 win over Dave Chisnall, who missed two darts at a double for a draw.

Earlier in the night, Gary Anderson got his first win of the tournament on the board with a 7-3 success over Raymond van Barneveld, while Adrian Lewis reeled off the final four legs to defeat James Wade by a 7-5 scoreline.

The final match in Aberdeen saw Robert Thornton register a 6-6 draw against Peter Wright.
