Former England captain Andrew Strauss believes that Joe Root is ready to open the batting for his country against Australia in the Ashes.

Former England captain Andrew Strauss has praised the maturity of Joe Root since his arrival in the team.

Root has impressed in both the Test and one-day side, and with the 22-year-old expected to partner Alastair Cook at the top of the order in the Ashes, Strauss believes that he is capable of performing in the role.

The 36-year-old told Sky Sports News: "He's dealt with everything that's come his way.

"He looks very composed, looks entirely capable of making that job his own and I'm looking forward to watching him and Alastair Cook."

Root has already scored 424 runs in six Test matches for England.
