Dallas Mavericks reward coach Rick Carlisle with new deal

Dallas Mavericks sign head coach Rick Carlisle to a new five-year contract extension.

Dallas Mavericks have agreed terms with head coach Rick Carlisle on a five-year extension to his contract.

Mavericks have won two and lost two to start their Southwest Division campaign after an off-season of transition in Carlisle's eighth season in change of the franchise.

The club have now moved to secure the future of their head coach by signing him to a five-year deal worth a reported $35m (£23m), which will keep him on the Mavs' sidelines until 2021-22.

According to the club's website, Carlisle said: "I have the best owner and general manager in sports, and one of the greatest players in NBA history to thank for this opportunity. There is much work to be done as we move forward."

General manager Donnie Nelson added: "I think that he is one of the top coaches in the league, if not the top coach. We are blessed and lucky to have him. He can be in Dallas as long as he wants to be."

The 56-year-old coach began this season with a win percentage of just over 60% in regular-season games, as well as the distinction of having made the playoffs in six of his seven seasons to date in Dallas, including an NBA championship in 2011.
