Dallas Mavericks release Rashard Lewis

The Dallas Mavericks cancel the contract of veteran Rashard Lewis after he suffers a knee injury.

The Dallas Mavericks have cancelled the contract of forward Rashard Lewis after discovering that he needs surgery on his right knee.

Lewis only signed a one-year deal with the team last week, following a season with defeated NBA finalists the Miami Heat.

Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said via a statement: "It came to our attention during Rashard Lewis' physical that he is in need of a medical procedure on his right knee.

"We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery and continued success in his remarkable career."

The 34-year-old's agent Tony Dutt said that they are as yet unsure about the severity of the injury or how long Lewis might be out of action.
