Viletta seals gold for Switzerland in super combined event

Switzerland's Sandro Viletta has won the gold medal in the men's skiing super combined event at the Sochi Winter Olympics, his combined time of 2:45.20 securing an unexpected first-place finish.

The 28-year-old, who finished 14th in Vancouver four years ago, secured a time of 1:54.88 in the downhill stage, placing him in 14th place at the halfway point, but made amends for it in the slalom stage with a time of 50.32.

Though Slovakia's Adam Zampa completed the second stage in the quickest time - 50.11 - it wasn't enough to secure a podium place for the 23-year-old, whose downhill performance saw him placed 27th at the halfway mark. Zampa finished in fifth place.

Croatia's Ivica Kostelic won silver with a combined time of 2:45.54, while Christof Innerhofer of Italy secured the bronze with a final time of 2:45.67.

Bode Miller and Aksel Lund Svindal, who were widely tipped to be on the podium, finished in sixth and eighth place respectively.
