Tomas Berdych claims victory over Jeremy Chardy to advance at Wimbledon

Number six seed Tomas Berdych secures a victory over spirited Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in four sets to seal his spot in the second round of Wimbledon.

Number six seed Tomas Berdych has booked his place in the second round of Wimbledon by defeating Jeremy Chardy in four sets.

The 29-year-old began the match in dominant form as he broke the Frenchman three times in the first set to claim a 6-2 victory.

However, Chardy battled back in the second as both players held their serves to force a tie-breaker, but the 28-year-old managed to clinch the crucial points and level the match with a 10-8 win.

The third set followed a similar pattern to the second, despite breaks of serve from both players, although neither were able to capitalise on the breakthrough, forcing a tie-breaker. Berdych had the answers for the Frenchman this time to take the tie-breaker 7-3.

Both players continued to perform well on their serves, which enforced the third tie-breaker of the match. Chardy took an early lead, but then committed a costly error as he fired a forehand into the net and Berdych took full advantage to secure the match with an ace.

The Czech will take on Nicolas Mahut in the second round of the tournament.
