The top two seeded players had to wait three hours before taking to the court due to heavy rain in New York, and it was Djokovic who looked the sharper of the two players after the long wait, as the Serb broke his veteran opponent early in the first set.

Djokovic slipped on the court during the fourth game, causing the 28-year-old to graze his arm, and Federer broke back immediately. The number one seed recovered though, breaking Federer again with a backhand winner before holding to take the first set.

Federer responded well in the second, as the 34-year-old kept the pressure on Djokovic before breaking with a backhand shot that forced his opponent into making an error.

The Swiss star had the backing of much of the crowd after taking his first set, but Djokovic composed himself in the third. The Serb broke his opponent early on, before Federer broke back immediately. Djokovic held on though before breaking again as Federer missed a backhand winner.

Djokovic took complete control of the final set, as the number one seed broke Federer in the opening game, before breaking the veteran again with a superb forehand return to go 5-2 up.

Federer temporarily saved the match by breaking Djokovic back with a drop volley, before holding his serve to take another game, but the Serb wrapped up his second US Open title with a powerful serve that his opponent could not return.
