British number two Kyle Edmund has defeated Dusan Lajovic in three sets to earn a place in the main draw for the Shanghai Masters.
The 21-year-old, who was knocked out of the China Open by compatriot Andy Murray earlier this week, came through 6-4 2-6 6-3 in a time of one hour and 44 minutes on Sunday morning.
Edmund held his serve throughout the opening set, just about edging a mammoth seventh game which Lajovic failed to take with his six break points.
It was Lajovic's turn to hold in the second set, however, as he twice broke his opponent in quick succession to level things up overall in the Far East.
There was to be little trouble for Edmund in the decider, with three games on the spin to kick off the third set putting him in a commanding position to see things through for a place in the competition proper.
