Result: Ernests Gulbis defeats Juan Carlos Ferrero

Latvian Ernests Gulbis has defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero 3-6 6-1 7-5 in the first round of the Rogers Cup.

The Spaniard took the opening set comfortably after going 3-0 up, despite Gulbis's late rally to earn two break points in the ninth game.

However, the 22-year old turned things around in the second set and dominated his service game to take the match to a third and final set.

Both men held their service games, taking five games each until Gulbis won a decisive break point in the eleventh game, which allowed him to serve for the two-hour and 14 minute match.
