John Isner moves past Nick Kyrgios to reach Rogers Cup quarter-finals

John Isner beats Nick Kyrgios 7-5 6-3 to move into the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup in Canada.

John Isner has advanced into the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal after beating Nick Kyrgios in straight sets.

The American cruised past his Australian counterpart with a 7-5 6-3 victory in little over an hour to reach the last eight.

Nothing could separate the pair for the opening 11 games of the first set as Isner led 6-5, with Kyrgios serving to force a tie-break, but Isner pulled out a timely break of serve to draw first blood.

A broken service game also proved the pivotal moment in the second set, with Kyrgios needing to hold serve to level up at four games apiece, but Isner broke to move 5-3 up and never looked back.

Isner faces Jeremy Chardy of France in the quarters.
