Isner edges out Becker at Rogers Cup

John Isner has recorded a three-set win over Benjamin Becker to progress through to the last 32 at the Rogers Cup.

The American fired down 23 aces on the way to a 6-4 6-7 6-3 triumph over his German opponent.

Isner had won their previous three meetings, with the last coming in 2009, and he soon established a lead against the German with nine aces on the way to taking the first set.

Both men had break-point chances during the second, but after the set went to a tie-break, Isner wasted two match points as Becker reeled off four points in a row to force a decider.

However, the American regained his composure to break early in the third before comfortably serving out the remainder of the match.
