Heather Watson through opening qualifying match in Beijing

Heather Watson, who will lose her British number one status next week, beats Hsieh Su-Wei in the opening qualifying match for the China Open.

Heather Watson has moved one match away from qualifying for the China Open after recording a straight-sets win over Hsieh Su-Wei on Friday.

The 23-year-old, who will lose her status as British number one to Johanna Konta next week, broke three times during a back-and-forth opener to move ahead, and it was equally close during the second.

However, Watson was able to dominate a tie-break to eventually run out a 7-5 7-6 winner against the world number 113.

Watson will now face Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko for a place in the main draw in Beijing.
