Heather Watson through in Hobart, Johanna Konta out

Heather Watson begins the defence of her Hobart International title with a win over Teliana Pereira, but British number one Johanna Konta suffers an early exit.

Heather Watson has moved into the second round of the Hobart International with a comfortable win over Teliana Pereira.

The British number two, and defending champion at the Australian event, required just under 74 minutes to beat the Brazilian, who sits seven places higher in the world rankings at number 46.

Two breaks of serve helped Watson take the opener, although Pereira squandered nine of her 10 break-point opportunities, but the second was plain sailing for Watson who eventually sealed a 6-3 6-0 triumph.

However, there was disappointment for Johanna Konta as she fell to a 7-6 7-5 defeat to Dominika Cibulkova.

The decisive moment came in the first-set tie-break as the British number one missed out on five set points, and although she continued to match the 2014 Australian Open finalist, she failed to get a win on the board before the first Grand Slam of the year which begins in Melbourne next week.
