Tsonga suffers early exit in Japan

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the Japan Open to Polish qualifier Michal Przysiezny.

There was little to separate the players during a cagey opening set, but fifth seed Tsonga was able to break at 4-4 before going on to serve it out 6-4.

It was a similar story in the second as both men fought doggedly, though this time it was Przysiezny who needed a single break to take it 7-5.

The Pole moved 3-0 ahead at the start of the decider before Tsonga called for the trainer to take a look at a wrist problem. The Frenchman then fought back to make it 3-3 ahead of a thrilling tie-break between the pair.

Tsonga and Przysiezny squandered five match points between them during the breaker, only for the latter to eventually come through 4-6 7-5 7-6(9).
