Carla Suarez Navarro too strong for Julia Goerges

Carla Suarez Navarro books her spot in the third round of the Madrid Open by beating Julia Goerges 6-3 7-5.

Carla Suarez Navarro has reached the third round of the Madrid Open after beating Julia Goerges 6-3 7-5.

The early signs were promising for the home favourite as she earned three break points in the opening game of the match, but Goerges fought back to avoid a setback.

However, Suarez Navarro continued to look the stronger of the two players as she dictated the tempo in the longer rallies, and Goerges struggled to cause problems for her rival before being broken twice in two service games to hand the opener to the 10th seed.

Two breaks of serve quickly became three as Suarez Navarro raced into a 3-0 lead in the second set, but Goerges pegged back the 10th seed by converting her third break point of the seventh game.

Suarez Navarro refused to be denied, and the victory was confirmed when she broke once again to avoid a tie-break.
