Roger Federer edges past Phillip Kohlschreiber in Halle

Roger Federer scrapes through in Halle

Roger Federer has made a nervy start to his grass-court campaign with a three-set win over Phillip Kohlschreiber at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

The world number two won the first set on a tie-break, but Kohlschreiber hit back and clinched the second set 6-3.

The German looked on course to dump Federer out as he broke the defending champion, and led 5-3 in the decider.

However, the 17-time Grand Slam winner kept his cool and managed to take the match to a deciding tie-break, which he won.

Federer is preparing to try to win his eighth Wimbledon title next month.
