Naomi Broady stuns Ana Ivanovic in Auckland

British number three Naomi Broady beats former world number one Ana Ivanovic in the first round of the ASB Classic in Auckland.

Naomi Broady has recorded the biggest win of her career by beating Ana Ivanovic in the first round of the ASB Classic.

The British number three, who won three qualifying matches to reach the main draw in Auckland, came through by a 7-5 6-4 scoreline against the former world number one.

In the second half of 2016, Broady made a significant move up the WTA rankings before ending the year in 122nd place, but the triumph over Ivanovic has moved her to within touching distance of her career-high standing of 116th.

The 25-year-old hit 14 aces and broke Ivanovic's serve four times during an impressive display against the second seed, which has set up a second-round clash with world number 84 Jelena Ostapenko.

However, there was disappointment in Shenzhen as British number one Johanna Konta suffered a three-set defeat to Wang Qiang.
