Heather Watson edges through in Hobart

British number two Heather Watson is through to the last eight of the Hobart International with a gutsy three-sets win over fourth seed Monica Niculescu.

Heather Watson has booked her place in the quarter-finals of the Hobart International with a 6-7 6-2 7-6 victory over fourth seed Monica Niculescu.

On Wednesday, the match was halted at one set apiece, with Watson holding a 3-1 advantage when the encounter was restarted 24 hours later.

At 5-4, Watson served for a place in the quarter-finals, but after a lengthy 10th game, she dropped serve and Niculescu seized the initiative.

Watson saved three match points to take the contest into a final-set tie-break, but her Romanian opponent quickly moved into a 3-1 lead.

However, Watson reeled off six points in a row to book her place in the last eight, with Johanna Larsson awaiting her in the next round.
