Konta, Edmund battle through in Brisbane

Johanna Konta has booked her place in the last eight of the Brisbane International with a three-set victory over Ajla Tomljanovic.

The British number one is defending 580 ranking points ahead of the Australian Open, and the 26-year-old took another step to maintaining her world ranking position with a 4-6 6-1 6-4 win on Tuesday.

Konta dropped serve on four occasions during the opening set, but she gradually began to outclass the Croatian - who is based in Brisbane - to set up a meeting with either Ana Konjuh or Elina Svitolina.

In the men's draw, Kyle Edmund opened up his campaign with a 6-7 7-6 6-4 triumph over Denis Shapovalov, who got the better of the Brit at Queen's and the US Open last year.

Shapovalov look on course for a third straight win over the 22-year-old, but Edmund dropped just 14 points on serve during the final two sets to secure victory in two hours and 30 minutes.

Edmund will now play Chung Hyeon for a place in the quarter-finals.
