Simona Halep enjoys victorious start at WTA Finals in Singapore

Simona Halep gets her WTA Finals campaign off to a winning start with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Eugenie Bouchard.

Simona Halep has won her opening match of the 2014 WTA Finals in Singapore by beating Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets.

The world number four was dominant from the start, with two breaks of serve moving her into a commanding 3-0 lead during the opening set.

Bouchard, who defeated Halep in the Wimbledon semi-finals earlier this year, failed to recover after that as the Romanian closed it out 6-2 with just 33 minutes on the clock.

The second set proved to be a tighter affair between the pair as Bouchard improved her game, but Halep managed to seal the victory 6-2 6-3.

Both players have been pitted in the red group alongside defending champion Serena Williams, who defeated Ana Ivanovic 6-4 6-4 earlier on Monday.
