Stanislas Wawrinka not surprised by defeat to Dominic Thiem

Wawrinka not surprised by defeat

Stanislas Wawrinka has insisted that he deserved to be beaten by qualifier Dominic Thiem in the second round of the Madrid Open.

The Australian Open champion was stunned 6-1 2-6 4-6 on Tuesday night against the Austrian world number 70.

Despite the surprise loss, Wawrinka believes that Thiem was worthy of progressing in the Spanish capital.

"I was hesitating with my game and he went for it and deserved to win," the Swiss told the ATP's official website.

"He's a good player. We all know that. We all see that, especially since the beginning of the year. I'm not surprised because I know him."

Thiem will now face either Mikhail Youzhny or Feliciano Lopez for a place in the quarter-finals.
