Emma Raducanu advances to the second round of the Slovenia Open after a 6-2 5-3 walkover win over Dayana Yastremska, who retired with a wrist injury.

British number one Emma Raducanu has progressed to the second round of the Slovenia Open after first-round opponent Dayana Yastremska retired injured on Monday.

The 19-year-old first seed - who accepted a wildcard into the tournament - was 6-2 5-3 up in the contest before Yastremska left the court after a medical timeout.

A ruthless Raducanu took four of the five break points on offer throughout the match - including three breaks in the first set as she asserted her dominance quickly.

The teenager was then forced to fend off three break opportunities for Yastremska in the second set as the Ukrainian fought back, but the 22-year-old's tournament came to an abrupt end not long after.

Yastremska was forced to take a medical timeout with an apparent wrist injury as Raducanu was two points away from claiming a straight-sets win, and the British number one continued to keep warm on the court in case her opponent managed to recover.

However, the Ukrainian player was forced to call it a day as Raducanu made it through to round two, where she will meet either Elizabeth Mandlik of the USA or Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam.

"No one wants to win by retirement, but Dayana's an extremely ferocious competitor. I was fighting the whole way through and I'm happy to be in the next round," Raducanu said on the court.

Tuesday's first-round action will see Raducanu's compatriot Jodie Burrage take to the court as she battles Aleksandra Krunic for a place in the last-16.
