Jo-Wilfried Tsonga comfortably defeats Jurgen Melzer in straight sets to take a quarter-final spot against either Stanislas Wawrinka or Andy Murray in Monte Carlo.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters by comfortably beating Jurgen Melzer 6-3 6-0.

The Frenchman started off strong on the clay surface by nabbing the first break of serve, while Melzer struggled to find his rhythm and handle Tsonga's powerful shots.

The break point proved crucial for Tsonga, who committed strong returns and damaging forehands to push on and take a one-set lead in Monte Carlo.

Melzer had a lot to do in the second set, but he failed to launch a comeback as he was broken by Tsonga at the first time of asking.

The Frenchman managed to hold his serve and snatch a second break swiftly to wrap up the second set, leaving Melzer without one game on the board.

Tsonga will face either Stanislas Wawrinka or Andy Murray in the next round.
