Jurgen Melzer defeats Nicolas Almagro in straight sets to nab a place in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Jurgen Melzer has overcome the number 10 seed Nicolas Almagro 6-4 6-2 to clinch a place in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Melzer took control in the early stages of the first set by snatching a vital break following a number of strong service games by Almagro.

The advantage served him well as he went on to grab a one-set lead and continued to dominate the clay court in the second set.

Almagro struggled to launch a comeback as he could only put two games on the board, while Melzer went from strength to strength with his serve and swift returns to secure a place in the next round.
