Wawrinka wins Simon marathon

Stanislas Wawrinka is through to the last 16 of the French Open for the third consecutive year after dispatching Gilles Simon in five sets.

The Swiss number two claimed a sloppy opening set 7-5 despite making 25 errors.

Although the pair shared six breaks of serve in sets two and three, both were closely fought and settled by tie-breaks in favour of Simon.

Wawrinka raised in game at the start of the fourth set and reduced his unforced error count remarkably, helping him to record a thrilling 7-5 6-7 6-7 6-3 6-2 win.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga awaits Wawrinka in round four after the French number one beat Fabio Fognini in straight sets.
