Heather Watson exits French Open

Heather Watson loses in the opening round of the French Open to Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele.

Great Britain's number two Heather Watson was knocked out of the French Open this afternoon courtesy of a 6-4 2-6 6-4 defeat to Stefanie Voegele.

In what was her first competitive encounter since she recovered from glandular fever, Watson started slowly in Paris and was broken early on, which allowed her Swiss opponent to go on and take the opening set.

Watson rallied and broke for a 2-0 lead in the second, only to surrender her serve straight away. However, the Brit won the next four games to force the match into a decider.

It proved to be too much for Watson, who seemed to be lacking some fitness. She was broken during the middle of the third set and was unable to make any inroads on the Voegele serve.

Watson has joined her compatriots Laura Robson and Elena Baltacha, who were also beaten in round one.
