Thiem overcomes Goffin to make semi-final

Young Austrian Dominic Thiem has made the semi-finals of the French Open after beating Belgian's David Goffin 4-6 7-6 6-4 6-1 on Thursday afternoon.

The 22-year-old, whose previous best at the French Open had been the second round in both 2014 and 2015, will take on world number one Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Grand Slam on Friday.

Three breaks of serve occurred in the first three games of the last-eight match and it was Goffin that took the opener 6-4 after breaking Thiem for the third time at 4-5.

There were four more breaks of serve in the second set as both players continued to struggle for consistency, but Thiem managed to come through the tie-break 9-7 to level the quarter-final at one set all.

Goffin took a 2-0 lead early in the third set after breaking the Thiem serve once again, but the Austrian recovered to secure two breaks of his own and move ahead in the match after taking the third 6-4.

Thiem's best tennis came in the fourth and what proved to be final set, however, as the Austrian, who made the third round of the Australian Open earlier this year, held each of his four serves and broke twice to take it 6-1.

Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka will clash in the other semi-final tomorrow afternoon.
