World number 172 Thiago Seyboth Wild stuns second seed Daniil Medvedev in five sets to knock the Russian out of the French Open in the first round at Roland Garros.

Second seed Daniil Medvedev has been knocked out of the French Open in the first round courtesy of a five-set defeat to qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild.

The world number 172 pulled off one of the biggest French Open upsets in recent memory in a match that lasted more than four hours, eventually running out a 7-6[5] [6]6-7 2-6 6-3 6-4 winner at Roland Garros.

Seyboth Wild utilised his forehand excellently throughout the match, while Medvedev failed to show anything close to the form that had seen him win a first clay-court title in Rome and left him in contention for the world number one ranking heading into the second Grand Slam of the year.

Things looked set to go to script when Medvedev broke at the first available opportunity, but Seyboth Wild stormed back to take the opening set via a tiebreaker.

The second set also went the distance - this time Medvedev coming out on top in the tiebreak - and the Russian looked firmly on course to survive his scare when he took the third set 6-2.

However, aided by 15 Medvedev double faults along the way, Seyboth Wild fought back once again, racing into a 3-0 lead in the fourth set before seeing it out 6-3, and then breaking three times en route to 6-4 in the decider.

The biggest win of the Brazilian's career takes him into a Grand Slam second round for the first time, having not even played a Tour-level match this year before this victory.

Seyboth Wild, who becomes the first player to knock out a top-two seed at Roland Garros since 2000, will next face Argentina's Guido Pella in the second round.

Also at the French Open on day three, Alexander Zverev won on his return to the Grand Slam where he suffered a serious injury last year, while Casper Ruud and Holger Rune both made it safely through to the second round too.
