Roberta Vinci out of French Open after first-round defeat to Kateryna Bondarenko

Vinci ousted by world number 65

Roberta Vinci was stunned in the first round of the French Open as she lost in straight sets to world number 65 Kateryna Bondarenko in Paris on Monday.

Bondarenko, who has not progressed further than the third round at Roland Garros, earned a 6-1 6-3 victory in one hour.

The 29-year-old Ukrainian had a positive start as she broke serve at the first time of asking before breaking a further two times to gain full control of the clay court.

Vinci, who was a finalist in last year's US Open, could only get one game on the board in the first set as she failed to create a single break point.

The seventh seed tried to launch a comeback in the second as she broke back on two occasions, but it was not enough to stop Bondarenko as she comfortably secured progression into the next round.
