Garbine Muguruza ousts 2009 champion to advance into French Open quarter-finals

Garbine Muguruza is into the last eight of the 2016 French Open thanks to a 6-3 6-4 victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova at Roland Garros.

Svetlana Kuznetsova has seen her hopes of winning the French Open for a second time come to an end, having been dumped out by Garbine Muguruza in straight sets.

The 2009 winner fell 6-2 6-4 at Roland Garros on Sunday morning, as her fourth seed opponent matched her previous best finish in Paris by reaching the last eight.

Muguruza held throughout the opening set, serving three aces to grab an early foothold on the match which she used to push herself to victory.

A loss of serve in the third game of the second set left Kuznetsova with it all to do, but she did hit back in the eighth to keep her hopes of progression alive.

Muguruza prevailed from a tight and decisive ninth game, though, before eventually taking her fifth match point to set up a meeting against either Irina-Camelia Begu or Shelby Rogers in next week's quarter-finals.
