Good morning and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of day one of the 2012 French Open at Roland Garros.
The red clay throws up a very different challenge to the hard and grass courts, with current men's champion Rafael Nadal very much the favourite for the title.
World number one Novak Djokovic will be keen to take the trophy away from Nadal, while Roger Federer will also look to add to his trophy-ridden cabinet.
In terms of the women, Serena Williams has enjoyed a tremendous 17-match winning streak, and she will look to take the title away from Li Na, who sent 116 million television viewers in China into raptures when she secured the title last year.

21.00: So, that concludes our coverage from the opening day of the French Open. And what a day it has been. Andy Roddick's exit at the hands of Nicolas Mahut was one of the most notable surprises, but Michael Berrer's victory over Jurgen Melzer was just as eye-opening. On the women's side, Venus Williams edged through against an impressive Paula Ormaechea while Britain's Elena Baltacha was knocked out by Sam Stosur. Laura Robson is in action from 10am on Monday morning, while Victoria Azarenka and Novak Djokovic are also on court. Thanks for your time on this glorious summer day and we hope to see you again tomorrow. Au revoir!
20.50: That also means that Rui Machado's game with Kevin Anderson will also have to finish tomorrow. Their match is even more finely balanced with the score 7-7 in the deciding set.
20.47: As the light fades in Paris, Lukasz Kubot's match with Karol Beck has been suspended until tomorrow. The match is brilliantly poised as the pair are tied at 4-4 in the third with both players having taking a previous set.
20.45 She certainly made it difficult for herself, but Alexa Glatch finally managed to close out her match against Anna Tatishvili.
RESULT: Glatch 6-3 5-7 6-4 Tatishvili
20.36: But Glatch breaks back! The American now has the chance to serve out the match.
20.33: It's all change in the match between Glatch and Tatishvili as the Georgian breaks the American. It's now 4-4 in the third.
20.27: Well, well, well. Just as it looked like Rui Machado was going to close out his gruelling match with Kevin Anderson the South African manages to find a break of serve in the final set. Anderson is now serving to make it 5-5.
20.17: Right, Rui Machado is nearing round two of the competition as he finds himself 5-2 up in the fifth set against Kevin Anderson. Meanwhile, Glatch is 3-2 ahead in the deciding set of her match against Tatishvili.
20.14: That was quite a performance from Dinah Pfizenmaier. She looked on her way out of the tournament early on in that match but some versatile shots from the German have given her a place in the next round.
RESULT: Pfizenmaier 3-6 6-4 6-3 Garcia
20.12: Goodness me, Pfizenmaier is only two points away from victory after an outrageous backhand beats Garcia.
20.10: Pfizenmaier will serve for the match following an error from Garcia. Can the German hold her nerve?
20.05: SET! It's all happening now. Anderson and Machado will go to a fifth-set after the South African saw off his opponent 6-1 in the fourth.

19.50: Pfizenmeier looked to be in trouble for a moment there, but having regained her compsure she managed to hold serve. The German is currently 2-1 ahead in the third. Garcia to serve.
18.46: Click here for Sports Mole's report fo Venus Williams's first-round triumph over Paula Ormachea.
19.40: Here's a potentially mouth-watering tie for you: Venus Williams could play Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round at Roland Garros. However, the world number four will have to see off Bojana Jovanovski to make that a reality.
19.36: SET! Pfizenmaier had to battle hard to close out that second set, but the German managed to take it 6-4. One set all now in her match with Garcia.
19.31: Rui Machado has given himself a boost in his match against Kevin Anderson with an early break in the fourth. The Portuguese currently leads by two sets to one.
RESULT: Johansson 5-7 7-6[6] 6-4 Rodionova
19.26: And there you have it. Venus Williams gives a tired-looking smile after Paula Ormaechea finds the net to end the match. It was by no means a classic performace by the American, but you wouldn't put it past her to make a few waves at Roland Garros this year. A big shout has to also go to Ormaechea thanks to a hugely spirited performance from the 19-year-old. I'm sure that we haven't heard the last of the Argentine.
RESULT: Williams 4-6 6-1 6-3 Ormaechea
19.22: Williams takes a step closer to victory in what has been a riveting match. A laboured rally eventually comes to an end when Ormaechea puts her backhand into the net. The American is 5-3 up now. Ormaechea to serve.
19.20: It's now Williams who looks to be in control as another break gives her a 4-3 advantage. Ormaechea couldn't handle her stinging forehand.
19.19: Amongst all of that excitement, Anderson and Machedo are not quite into a final set. Machedo is now 2-1 in front thanks to a 6-4 win in the third. They've just started the fourth.
19.17: Neither Williams nor Ormaechea can get a hold in this final set. Both players have dropped two service games each now to make it 3-3. Tense stuff.
19.14: Anderson and Machedo will go down to the wire after the Portuguese takes the fourth set 6-4. Meanwhile, Kublot has edged out Beck 7-5 in the first set of their clash.
19.12: So, Irena Pavlovic has booked her place in the second round with a victory over Kai-Chen Chang. T o be fair, the Frenchwoman was rarely troubled today.

18.52: SET! Caroline Garcia takes the initiative in her match with Dinah Pfizenmaier thanks to a 6-3 win in the first set.
18.50: SET! Williams deservedly takes the second set 6-1 after some thrilling stuff from the 2002 semi-finalist. She showed some remarkable power there to brush aside Ormaechea.
18.48: To update, we're also underway in Beck vs. Hublot, Garcia vs. Pfizenmaier and Tatishvili and Glatch.
18.46: And there it is! An incredible display from Michael Berrer sees the German come from two sets down to defeat Jurgen Melzer. It is a huge upset if only for the fact that there are 399 places that seperate the players in the rankings.
RESULT: Berrer 6-7[5] 4-6 6-2 6-2 6-2 Melzer
18.43: We have a big breakthrough in the match between Berrer and Melzer as world number 408 Berrer finds a break of serve in the deciding set. The German now has the chance to serve out the match and deliver one of the shocks of day one here at Roland Garros.
18.41: As if from nowhere Williams is on fire! A delightful backhand under pressure forces Ormaechea to make the error. The American is now 4-0 ahead in this second set.
18.35: Mathilde Johansson's encounter with Anastasia Rodionova will go to a deciding set. An 8-6 win in the tie-break forces this one go the distance.
18.33: A blistering start for Venus in the second set. The seven-time Grand Slam winner overpowers Ormaechea to earn a break and build a 2-0 lead.
18.29 SET! Rui Machado has just levelled things up in his contest with Kevin Anderson. The Portuguese saw off the South African 8-6 in the tie-break. There could be some mileage in that one...

18.23 SET! Ormaechea takes the first set 6-4 after holding serve to love against an indifferent Williams. Are we on course for one of the upsets of the opening weekend?
18.20 Venus is still scrapping away. Having saved, and then wasted, a set point, the world number 52 holds serve after Ormaechea launches a wild forehand well out of bounds. However, the 19-year-old will now serve for the set.
18.13: It's all square between Berrer and Melcher as a 6-2 triumph for the German means that the game will go into a deciding set.

"Coming into this, she has a massive opportunity against the US Open champion on one of the best courts in the world, hitting the ball harder, stepping into the court - Vesnina had better watch out. 9.32: One of the most fascinating aspects of the French Open is its ability to throw up unlikely winners, and cases could be made for the likes of Juan Martin Del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who will be on home turf.
9.30: Djokovic, Nadal and Federer have all made the semi-finals in five of the last 10 male Grand Slams, but Federer's passage this year could prove very bumpy. The Swiss has been placed on Djokovic's side of the draw, so he would not see Nadal until the final, likewise for the Serbian.
