The Japanese took 50 minutes to wrap up the first two sets by a 6-1 scoreline, but was taken all the way in a third set that lasted an hour.

However, the Serbian could not rouse a comeback, as the 24-year-old won the tie-breaker 7-3 to seal his progress.

The world number 17 will face the winner between Donald Young and Andreas Seppi for a place in the fourth round.
