Francesca Jones's remarkable run at the Copa Colsanitas ends with a 6-3 6-4 defeat to reigning champion Tatjana Maria in the semi-finals.

Francesca Jones's magical run at the Copa Colsanitas came to an end with a two-set defeat to reigning champion Tatjana Maria in a weather-disrupted semi-final.

The world number 817 - who overcame players ranked hundreds of places higher than her to advance to her maiden WTA Tour semi-final - lost 6-3 6-4 to the German in Bogota.

Jones had undoubtedly been the success story of the week in Bogota, but the step-up in class against the Wimbledon semi-finalist immediately took its toll on the 22-year-old, who lost the first five games of the match.

Jones earned one break back in a three-game winning streak as she threatened an astonishing fightback, but Maria remained as accurate as ever on serve and comfortably saw out the first set.

In contrast, Jones's penchant for double faults came to the fore, but the courageous Briton managed to earn the first break of the second set before Maria broke back straight away.

Jones found herself 4-3 up in the second set before the heavens opened, leading to a lengthy rain delay, and she crucially wasted a break point in the eighth game after the restart.

Seemingly benefitting from the break more than her counterpart, Maria won the next three games to halt Jones's magnificent journey and set up a showpiece match with Peyton Stearns or Kamilla Rakhimova.

Earlier in the day, Dan Evans missed out on just a fourth ATP Tour singles final as he lost in three sets to Roberto Carballes Baena in the semi-finals of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech.

The world number 30 could not build on a dominant first set as he went down 2-6 6-4 6-2 to the Spaniard - who will face France's Alexandre Muller in the final - in two hours and 36 minutes.

The pair traded breaks in the opening two games of the match before Evans found his groove, winning four games on the spin to clinch the opening set, although he was never truly comfortable on serve.

Nothing could separate Evans or Carballes Baena during the first eight games of the second set, but the Spaniard finally earned his first break of the match in the ninth before a hold to 30 forced a defining third set.

Evans's resistance had now been well and truly broken, as Carballes Baena squandered three break points in the first game of the third set before converting his fourth.

The world number 82 broke again in the fifth before seeing out a stellar comeback victory, ending Evans's hopes of competing for his second tour-level crown.
