Mick Gault fails in bid to break Commonwealth medal record

Mick Gault misses out on a spot in the 50m air pistol final as his bid to make it 19 Commonwealth medals ends in disappointment.

Mick Gault has failed in his bid to break the Commonwealth medal record after missing out on qualifying for the final of the 50m air pistol event.

The 60-year-old tied the record of 18 medals with a bronze in the 10m final on Saturday, but his hopes of adding another piece of history were halted at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre on Monday morning.

Gault could only manage a finish of 13th in qualifying, which was not enough to see him join the participants in the final as the top eight shooters went through to the next stage.

However, there was success for Kristian Callaghan, who remains in contention for a medal.
