Liam Williams: 'I feel sorry for Leigh Halfpenny'

Liam Williams claims that he is ready to go in Wales's Rugby World Cup opener against Uruguay, but spares a thought for injured full-back Leigh Halfpenny.

Wales full-back Liam Williams has admitted that he felt "really sorry" for Leigh Halfpenny after he suffered a knee injury on the eve of the World Cup.

Halfpenny, who was player of the series when the Lions won in Australia two years ago, was ruled out of the tournament after rupturing cruciate ligaments in the 23-19 victory over Italy earlier this month.

However, Williams has said that he is relishing his chance to play for his country in a World Cup.

He told reporters: "I feel really sorry for Leigh. He's a great player who has been brilliant for Wales over the years.

"For him to have a cruciate ligament injury and miss the World Cup is terrible luck, but I guess it's sport.

"All I can do is come in and do a job for my country. I am fit, ready to go and really looking forward to the World Cup starting."

Halfpenny could also miss next year's Six Nations after undergoing surgery.
