Result: New Zealand 41-10 Tonga

Hosts New Zealand began the Rugby World Cup with victory over Tonga in Auckland today.

The All Blacks produced a scintillating first-half display, with Richard Kahui and Israel Dagg both scoring a pair of tries.

Dan Carter converted three of the four tries to give the home side a 29-3 half-time lead.

The second-half was a different affair with New Zealand showing less of the first-half flair.

They still scored two tries with flanker Jerome Kaino and centre Ma'a Nonu going over.

Tonga did score when Alisona Taumalolo forced the ball over after some sustained pressure from the Sea Eagles.

New Zealand next face Japan next Friday while Tonga play Canada on Wednesday.
