Kiwi bets £55,000 on New Zealand to fail to retain World Cup

A New Zealander has bet £55,000 on his own country to fail to retain this year's Rugby World Cup.

A pessimistic Kiwi has placed a large bet against New Zealand at this year's Rugby World Cup.

The Aucklander, known only as 'Dave', has bet $NZ130,000 (£55,000) on New Zealand to fail to retain the William Webb Ellis trophy.

It is the biggest bet the Totalisator Agency Board has ever received against the All Blacks and one of the biggest in the country's history.

Dave called the betting agency's head office this week asking to speak to media manager Mark Stafford, so that he could personally make a bet with TAB's front man. "It certainly made me sit up and take notice," Stafford told the NZ Herald.

Placed at odds of $1.55, Dave's bet stands to earn him $71,500 (£30,000) if the All Blacks bomb out at the Cup.

New Zealand will face Argentina, Tonga, Namibia, and Georgia in Pool C when the World Cup starts next month.
