Warren Gatland: Wales were lucky

Warren Gatland admits that his Welsh team "got out of jail" in their last-gasp win over Ireland in the Six Nations.

Warren Gatland has admitted that his Welsh team "got out of jail" in their dramatic Six Nations win over Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.

Wales stole a 23-21 victory in the final minute of the game, with a controversial Leigh Halfpenny penalty.

Despite outscoring their opponents 3-2 on tries, Gatland felt his side were below their best and fortunate to win.

The former New Zealand hooker said: "We were reasonably lucky. I thought we were only at about 70 per cent today.

"But to come here and be under pressure and to come back with 14 men shows great character.

"The displeasing thing was a bit of a lack of discipline with the yellow card. We got out of jail, but we've won our first game of the tournament away from home."

Wales last lifted the Six Nations in 2008.
