Ronan O’Gara: Ireland retirement hints taken out of context

Ronan O’Gara has denied that he will retire from Test rugby with Ireland once the World Cup is over.

The fly-half hinted that his international career could be over when speaking to reporters after the side’s 15-6 victory over Australia on Saturday.

Despite his comments, the 34-year-old has insisted that the quotes were taken out of context.

"On Saturday I was speaking in the context of being done with Ireland in six or seven weeks' time in terms of this World Cup," O’Gara said.

"That's where I stand at the minute. It's important for me to put an end to this because it's a distraction the team don't need.

"In my own head I'll reassess at the end of the World Cup. But I want to be part of this team because it's a great team at the moment.”

Ireland continue in their World Cup campaign when they take on Pool C opponents Russia on Sunday.
