Ex-Australia flanker Phil Waugh: 'Eddie Jones will bond with England players'

Waugh: 'Jones will bond with players'

Former Australia international Phil Waugh has claimed that England's new head coach Eddie Jones will connect with his players.

Jones was appointed as Stuart Lancaster's replacement on a four-year contract this morning.

Waugh believes that the 55-year-old, who has had spells at Australia, South Africa and Japan, will be able to motivate the team.

"He wants to win and he'll do anything to win and I think that resonates with players because players are very much in that same mentality," Waugh told BBC Radio 5 live.

"As a guy Eddie Jones is a good guy. He'll enjoy a beer in social settings with the team but when it comes down to performance he knows how to drive it."

Jones's first major game will be against Scotland at Murrayfield for England's Six Nations opener on February 6.
