Rob Baxter: 'I never considered England job'

Rob Baxter says that he never considered becoming England head coach and was not contacted by the RFU regarding the post.

Exeter Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter has admitted that he never considered the opportunity to become England head coach.

After Stuart Lancaster stood down earlier this month, Baxter was mooted as a possible choice, should the RFU have not opted to appoint their first foreign boss, as they did in hiring Eddie Jones.

However, Baxter has also revealed that he was never asked, but hopes that Jones will consider English coaches for his backroom staff.

He told the Western Morning News: "Human nature should say to those players that they want to impress him and they'll want to make sure that they are playing well in these games when he first starts to look at them.

"I would like to think that any of our players who have genuine ambitions to play for England will been driven that little bit more to show some qualities now. I don't know him (Jones) at all but I am looking forward to meeting him and to discuss our lads.

"I'd hope to learn how he sees things going forward as I don't know too much about his coaching style. I would like to think that some England coaches had been considered, I certainly wasn't asked, but it is now for the Premiership sides to produce the players."

Exeter won their first game in this season's Champions Cup, with a 34-19 victory over Bordeaux Begles.
